Before pests can get into your home, they start outside of it. Luckily, there are techniques you can use to keep pests as far away from your home as possible. If pests get into your home anyway, you will want to contact a professional who knows about pest control in Portland to help you clear them out. Pests of all varieties can cause a lot of damage to your house, which is why you should work to stop them before they even come close. If you have property that you want to keep protected, use the following methods of outdoor pest control to ensure no future problems.

Eliminate Dead Vegetation

One of the leading attractions for insects is dead vegetation. This can come in the form of a dead or dying tree, dead shrubs, or any other plant life. Insects will set up nests in the wood, use the wood supply for food, and then spread out wider and wider as time goes by. This will give them access to your home eventually. By removing dead plant life and replacing it with healthy versions, you can keep insects at bay and control their populations on your property.

Keep Shrubs and Other Plants a Safe Distance Away

If you want to have plant life on your property or in your landscape design, make sure it is a safe distance away from your home. Insects and rodents can climb into the plant and get into your home without any trouble if the plants are too close. You will want to keep them at least a couple feet away from your foundation so pests will have less desire to go inside. Don’t give pests easy access to your home. Keeping plants a safe distance away is a good outdoor pest control method.

Wood Piles and Compost

Homes with wood stoves often have wood piles close at hand. If you have a wood stove in your home, you will want to make sure the wood pile is a safe distance away. Termites and carpenter ants are known to get into wood piles and then migrate right to the home without too much trouble. This is especially true if the wood pile is close to the home, or even in the garage. If you do not have the land space to keep the wood pile far away, you can put the wood on a platform so it will not be touching the ground. This makes it more difficult for termites and carpenter ants.
